Biography:
Two emerging fresh talents on the NYC & international dance music scene, we are proud to introduce CHRIS & KAI. Named Christopher Ruskis and Wen-Kai Ying, respectively, these two fresh-faced DJs/producers are gaining notoriety with their first double-pack vinyl release on Yoshitoshi ("Catch Me/Suffocation").

At only 22 (Chris) and 24 years old (Kai), the duo already possesses a long history of musical leanings. Chris’ musical obsession began early at age 13 with buying records and studying at a recording studio the following year. By 16, he was organizing parties at school and doing live PAs; as a mere high school student, he was also attending NYU’s Music Technology school. He plays electric guitar, drums and bass guitar and still frequents the Metropolitan Opera as well as various classical and Broadway shows for musical inspiration.

Also at an early age, Kai started off with piano lessons that led to a year of study at the Julliard School of Music. Then, his discovery of MP3s and the technology behind them allowed Kai to start producing in secluded New Hampshire while finishing his studies at Dartmouth. Isolated and alone, producing cannot be qualified without the visceral experience of listening to music. Following the sound of the beat, Kai moved to New York City and met his now studio partner Chris. The duo spent countless nights at legendary nightclub Twilo in NYC being inspired by the fresh new sounds of top international talent in the late 90s.

After heading to Winter Music Conference with demos in tow, the duo made the rounds and one CDR landed in the right hands. Chris & Kai handed a copy to Deep Dish, who own the internationally respected US house label Yoshitoshi. They were immediately signed to the imprint.

In the studio, they specialize in beats & groove that utilize the essential ingredients and production techniques to create quality club music. Their first remixes on Hooj were for the Aphasia's ‘Acapulco’ track under their Chris & Kai moniker as well as an alias Naboombu . Not only limiting themselves to the house music genre, Chris & Kai have also been working on the hip-hop end of the business. They’re currently working on an EP project with Walt Anderson AKA Bless from P. Diddy’s Making the Band for release in early 2004. More details to follow on this explosive project...

On the dancefloor, Chris & Kai have exploded onto the NYC underground scene, pushing a sound based more on variety and range, blurring the lines between the many genres of house and techno music; from deep house to progressive, tribal house to techno, Chris & Kai constantly strive to create an evolution of future sounds.

As equal parts producers and DJs, there’s no telling how far this dynamic duo will go. Looking ahead, with the support of Ali & Sharam of Deep Dish / Yoshitoshi and with world-renowned DJ's such as John Digweed, Danny Howells, and Sander Kleinenberg caning their tracks, the future is at their grasp. Catch them on their rise up…
